Serviceable Obtainable Market (SOM) is the subset of your SAM that you can actually win given your team, funding, and operational capacity. It's the market share you can plausibly capture in the medium term (3-5 years) without additional funding or pivots. SOM is your growth ceiling before you need a different strategy.

Why It Matters

SAM tells you what's possible; SOM tells you what you can actually achieve. Investors use SOM to assess whether your path to profitability and scale is realistic or fantasy. A $50M SAM with a $5M SOM means you need 5-10 years of focused execution and efficient growth. A SOM that requires $500M in customer acquisition spend is worthless if you've only raised $5M. SOM forces you to be honest about your constraints.

How to Apply

Start with your SAM and apply compression factors: (1) Sales capacity—how many enterprise deals can your team close per year or how many SMBs can your marketing funnel convert? (2) Market penetration rate—what's a realistic share of available customers you can win in 3-5 years? (3) Revenue per customer. Calculate SOM as: SAM × realistic market share (5-25% is typical) × revenue per customer × timeline. For a 5-year horizon, a 15% penetration of a $50M SAM yields a $7.5M SOM. Model this with your CAC, churn, and payback period to validate feasibility.

Common Mistakes

• Overestimating market penetration. Most founders assume 20-30% market share in year 5; reality is typically 5-10% for winners in competitive markets.
• Ignoring operational constraints. You can't go from 10 customers to 1,000 in a year without hiring, raising money, or changing your model—SOM must reflect your actual hiring and funding plan.
• Treating SOM as TAM. Your SOM is not inspirational for investors; it's a grounded prediction. If it sounds unrealistic, it probably is.
