What is Product Requirements Document?
A Product Requirements Document (PRD) is a detailed blueprint for building a specific feature or product. It includes what you're building, why you're building it, who it's for, how it should work, and what success looks like. It's the bridge between strategy (the roadmap) and execution (the code).
Why It Matters
Without a PRD, engineers start building and realize halfway through that they misunderstood what you wanted. Or product has a different idea than design about what the feature should do. A good PRD prevents that waste. It forces you to think through edge cases and constraints before coding. How to Apply
Start with the user story: who is this for and what problem does it solve? Then detail the user flows: exactly how will a user interact with this feature? Include wireframes or mockups. Specify the acceptance criteria: the exact conditions that define success. Document constraints: performance requirements, browser support, security considerations, etc. Include analytics and measurement: how will you know this feature works? Call out assumptions you're making and risks if they're wrong. Write clearly for your audience—engineers need technical precision, not poetry. Keep it concise; a good PRD is 5-10 pages, not 50. Common Mistakes
