What is Roadmap?

A product roadmap is a structured plan that outlines what features or capabilities you're building, when you'll build them, and why they matter to your business. It's not a detailed technical specification—it's a strategic communication tool for your team, investors, and sometimes customers.

Why It Matters

A roadmap creates alignment and accountability. Without one, engineers build what they think matters, product makes promises to customers about timelines that don't exist, and the company careens between priorities week to week. A clear roadmap also helps you say no: when your sales team wants feature X and engineering wants to refactor, you can point to the roadmap and say 'that's not on it this quarter, and here's why.' Investors also want to know you have a strategic plan, not just ideas.

How to Apply

Start with your business metrics—what needs to move to hit your growth targets? Then work backward: what features would move those metrics? Group them into quarters or major releases. For each major initiative, be clear about the outcome you're optimizing for (not just the feature description). Share the roadmap openly with your team and solicit feedback—if engineers see problems with the plan, better to know now.
